Learn how to easily plan a large food shop and stop wasting money in convenience shops.

Unfortunately, convenience shops are exactly that. Too convenient! However, that comes at a large cost to you with prices as much as doubling in small shops.

With pasta is available for as little as £0.30 per pack in supermarkets and corner shops have priced a similar product for close to £1.40. It seems there is no limit to to how much extra we pay for convenience.

How Much Can You Save By Shopping in Supermarkets?

This is hard to give an exact figure for as this will differ country by country. How ever by showing you a plan for a food shop and the difference in the one from a corner shop, you’ll still see the difference between both lists. Ill be using a well known Supermarket in the UK, along with another very well known smaller shop that you might find in most areas in the UK.

To keep it fair ill also be looking for the cheapest of each item in both stores.

Item Time Supermarket Convenience Shop
Spaghetti  500g£0.55£1.50
Mushrooms 150g-250g£0.57 (250g)£1.10 (150g)
Sliced Bread 800g£0.49£0.75
Broccoli 350g Approx£0.47£0.70

I have only compiled a list of 4 products and quite quickly you can see that your paying almost double for the convenience shop.

With the total of the Supermarket coming to £2.08. And the smaller corner shop totalling £4.05, you can use that maths to work out that your roughly paying double what you would pay for the month.

If you spend £300 a month and you shop a lot in corner shops, you could be saving almost £150 per month!

Get Started With Planning Your Shop

The first thing you need to plan, is the number of meals to eat for the month. Which at first seems like a daunting task, however using this guide it should make it easier and once you have done it one or twice you’ll soon be wandering why you weren’t doing this before.

Main Meals For The Week

To break it down further we then split that into weeks, think of 7 meals that you might often have.

  • Chicken Chow Mein
  • Spaghetti bolognaise
  • Lasagne
  • Battered Cod and Chips
  • Sausage Casserole
  • Hunters Chicken
  • Carbonara

So we start to sort this into meats vegetables and extras, we can use 1 larger pack of chicken to complete 2 meals for this week, 1 Large pack of beef mince for another 2 meals. Then to finish, 1 pack of bacon, 1 pack of sausages and 1 pack of 4 Battered Cod Fillets (Frozen)

For the vegetables we would need onions for 4 dishes, so 1 large pack of onions, 1 Garlic for 3 meals, 1 pepper, 1 pack of frozen peas, maybe some runner beans.

Add any extras or sides you might like, then its onto the Lunch Menu.
